Joining God In Mission: Should you get paid to serve?

Phil | March 18, 2009 11:23 am

If you are called to be a Christian leader/pastor/missionary/etc, that does not automatically mean God is asking you to get paid for it.

“Who should the church pay to serve?”  This is the question Neil Cole is thoughtfully addressing from a biblical point of view in his current series of blog posts. If you are considering a career as a full-time paid minister or missionary, PLEASE take the 10 minutes to read this first!   Lives will be affected by your choice.

Life In EHO: Woman’s body found wrapped in American flag

Phil | March 12, 2009 3:56 pm

school-alleyThis morning I dropped my sons off at their primary center and saw a body wrapped in a U.S. flag in the alley next to the school – the path my family often takes to walk to/from school.  Police were already there and have been there all day.  A woman in her mid-30s.  Investigators are treating it as homicide.  No more details yet.

I wonder who she was and who will be missing her.  This is so horrible…

Joining God In Mission: The learning you bring with you…

Phil | 5:00 am

Sometimes we feel ill-equipped for this mission, indeed without God we are.  Yet with God we bring a lot more with us than we realize…

This is not an exhaustive list, but here are some learning experiences God gave us during our city dwelling from 1996-2006 that helped to shape us for the way of life we’re living now (2007-present):

Vision Delayed: Being faithful with the waiting time

Phil | March 11, 2009 5:00 am

If you’re an aspiring missionary waiting for funding or a team to come together, don’t let the fact that you are in a ‘holding phase’ stop you from planting the gospel as a way of life right now.  If you’re wanting to lead people to Christ “over there” and the pieces haven’t come together yet for you to go there, then by all means lead people to Christ “right here” while you wait.  It could be God is trying to grow you up for the task he has given you.

Before we started (4): God was growing us up for the task

Phil | March 10, 2009 5:00 am

God gave us a vision for catalyzing a church planting movement, and instead of letting us get started on this task right away, he made us wait seven long years.  It turns out we had a lot of growing up to do.  It was like God used the waiting years to hold up a mirror and lovingly force us to take a hard look at ourselves.  He provided key people (mentors and mentees) and key experiences (tough life lessons and great & terrible ministry moments that served as motive checks, integrity checks, resiliency checks, skills development, leadership growth, and more) to help us grow up for the vision.  We still have a lot of growing up to do, but those learning experiences from our ‘Central Hollywood days’ helped us so much in our short time so far in East Hollywood.

Before we started (3): God was clarifying the vision

Phil | March 9, 2009 5:00 am

A movement, not one congregation.  In Dec 1999 we caught the vision for catalyzing a church planting movement as a way to reduce “lostness” in the world.  Admittedly, we saw only a glimpse of this preferred future.  Maybe our “lenses were steamy” or maybe God, in his infinite knowledge, showed us only what our eyes could handle at the time.  We thought God wanted us to start a single church with a “Come To” environment.  Later, when our minds were ready, he revealed he is calling our families to facilitate a movement of reproducing churches with a “Go To” environment.

One foundation, multiple models.  For a long while I thought the important part of the vision was the model of church (house church vs store front vs mega church, etc).  God has since redirected my attention to the foundation of church (Jesus Christ and his way of life) regardless of the various models that will inevitably emerge as new groups of believers are living an obedient life and learning to put church together in their respective cultures.

Called to a way of life more than a city.  I used to talk a lot more about Los Angeles being a strategic location (“Los Angeles is an urban missions laboratory for the 21st century!”), almost as if LA was the only place to be.  I still love LA and think it is important to prayerfully choose where we will live intentionally for Christ.  God’s people ought to run into places of darkness and poverty, to be light in them, not avoid them.  Yet today I’m convinced almost any place can become a “strategic location” if Jesus’ followers are committed to living strategically for Jesus in the places he has put them. God’s mission is much bigger than Los Angeles or any one city.  For now, we are here, but I could see us living this way of life in other places, too.

I’m thankful God clarified the vision before we started this missionary effort in E-Ho.  The truth is, he had more things to clarify after we got here, and I’m positive he will have more things to show us and teach us, too, as our hearts are ready for it.  I pray I will be open to seeing whatever he wants me to see.

Before we started (2): God was building our village

Phil | March 8, 2009 5:00 am

In Dec 1999, when God gave us a vision for a church planting movement, we didn’t have the co-adventurers God wanted us to have yet, which now, thankfully, we do.  It took seven years before our “way of life village” materialized with Ed and Katie, and another year before Wendy would accompany us. God, who was highly involved in their lives, clearly had other journeys for them to go through before he put us all together as a tiny community of faith.  I’m so glad it worked out the way it did.
