Where we meet people #1
June 17, 2007 4:00 am | Written by PhilSeveral of you have asked us where we are meeting people, especially since we intentionally don’t have a church building to invite them to and “worship services” are not our primary contact point.
As a result of much harvest prayer (Luke 10:2), God has been creating divine appointments with His treasured, missing ones in MANY places. Here are six of our hotspots (they change as often as people do).
1. The elementary school – a great time to engage other parents is when our kids get let out of school. (Also, the school principal is a Christian, and she has been connecting school families with us when they go through crises. Praise God for this relationship of trust!)
2. Los Angeles City College – literally thousands of young people from at-risk communities all over LA (and the world!) pour into East Hollywood every week to attend this 2-year college and hang out in the community! Our prayer is that students will take the gospel ‘back home’ and start church planting movements in their own neighborhoods and countries!
3. Mom-and-pop stores– it’s amazing what doors God opens when we choose to just shop where the people shop with a missionary purpose in mind! In our urban village hundreds of people walk to their stores, which are located just around the block. We find you can become a familiar face (and therefore approachable) to a lot of neighbors just by walking by their front steps to and from the local “tiendas” (shops).
4. Pizza joint across from college – a popular hangout in the community
5. Coffee shops on a cold day and ice cream parlors on a hot day – we go where the people are!
6. The sidewalk - conversing with neighbors as they are washing or fixing their cars.
Tomorrow I’ll share six more.

On a related note, I’d like to add a line to a popular church slogan: “Christians only, not the only Christians.” This sounds great, but do you think it’s time we can add “…and we don’t hang out with Christians only”?
