Pink Trumpet Trees

…where beautiful Pink Trumpet Trees are flowering in front of graffiti walls and Central American mom ‘n’ pop shops! What God is doing with these trees, he is doing with people’s hearts in our gritty city!

Prayer Led to People

Baby #2 is almost here!

As many of you already are doing, please continue to pray for Ed, Katie, their son and the new baby due in late May!

“A great prayer movement precedes a great church planting movement…”

It’s amazing how prayer leads to people! By committing ourselves more fully to prayer (and the “active prayer” of sowing seeds abundantly) God has led us to meet over 200 hundred people since January and begin the early stages of spiritual friendship with about 20 of them. These are people who are spiritually hungry but suspicious of (even hostile toward) organized religion. At least one is an atheist, some of them believe in God but lack discipleship to Christ. Most will never set foot in a traditional church building or try an established church (again or for the first time). They are raw. Many have a rocky past (or present). They are just the kind of people we’ve been asking God to show us! Now we are asking the Lord of the Harvest to lead us to “good soil” (Mark 4) – people whose hearts are ready to let God’s word take root, grow and bear fruit for his glory.

A Women’s Group on the Horizon?

Phil | March 22, 2007 6:00 pm

Perhaps our most encouraging conversations have been with a neighborhood mom in her early twenties.  After going on zoo trips together and spending a great deal of time in each other’s homes, she told Meredith: “I don’t like organized religion, but I want to do something spiritual for our kids.”  Do you see a door opening here?  Meredith and Katie want to help her and other neighborhood women take the next steps in their spiritual journeys.  They long to hear their stories and share God’s story, to engage them in spiritual friendship and be reading God’s word with these women.  Similarly, Ed and I are looking for open doors with the husbands.  Please pray for open hearts to Jesus.  -Phil

Birthday Party – A Glimpse of Churches to Come!

Phil | March 18, 2007 6:00 pm

Yesterday was sure to be a highlight of this month. We celebrated our middle son’s 4th birthday party at the park. What a day it was! There we were – with 20 new friends who are desperate (whether they realize it or not) to know Jesus – enjoying each other’s company on a sunny day in LA. A diverse crowd, they originated from México, Korea, Thailand and the Samoan Islands!

After I led a prayer for my son, Meredith enthusiastically lined up the kids to take turns hitting the piñata. For hours they played as the adults chatted in lawn chairs under shady trees. As we gazed upon our new friends, we felt a deep longing in our hearts. We were witnessing what very well could be a simple church gathering. By God’s grace, next year they will reunite to celebrate not just a birthday but their new life in Christ! Each parent asked to spend more time with our families. “Let’s go on a picnic.” “When can we go out on a triple date?” “Let’s go fishing!” “So you’re coming over for dinner tomorrow, right?” “Do you like to sing karaoke? We know a great karaoke bar!” …It seems we’ve got lots to do! -Phil
