Some thoughts I carry with me into our new missionary adventure…
I told some of you about Jeremy [name has been changed], a seeker from our central Hollywood days who has ties to East Hollywood. Jeremy expressed interest in giving his life to Christ when two of his homies were killed in October. After the funerals we spent two days hanging out, talking about God. Jeremy seemed to be turning in the right direction, and then I stopped hearing from him. His cell phone was disconnected, he moved away, and I haven’t been able to get in touch. Over the last ten years of urban ministry, we’ve learned these things happen. People live such transient lifestyles, moving from one place to the next as economic or other problems arise. Their spiritual growth (like most people’s) comes in spurts. I’m very concerned for Jeremy, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he popped back into my life six months from now, ready to pick up where we left off. Jeremy’s story is a good reminder to us as we launch a new church planting endeavor in East Hollywood. It can be frustrating, but we have to demonstrate God’s patience, and not get caught up in our culture’s need for instant results. Jeremy made progress. I hope you will join me in praying for Jeremy, wherever he may be. I trust God will send someone to water the seed I planted. If Jeremy is willing, God will make it grow (1 Cor 3:6-7). -Phil
